Precious Data, 2021, 20.3” x 25.6”, Apple iMac, Mouse and keyboard, USB drives, Wood box with cover

Precious Data calls attention to the point of encounter and the decision to engage. The desktop display, with a short set of instructions, encourages us to browse through a collection of USB drives stored in a wooden box next to the monitor. The information, once valuable and “precious” enough to save, is now discarded, lost, and missed—a relic in a now anonymous archive. As the technology of USB drives becomes increasingly obsolete, the information becomes less and less accessible. The installation provokes the viewer-turned-user’s conscious decision to peer into the memories of strangers before the data can no longer be read.

Shown as part of a group show, “The Vibration That Now Charms Us”, at Aupuni Space
